Project Overview

Julius Nyerere International Airport Terminal 3 project aimed to demonstrate innovation in earthing and lightning protection design through advanced 3D modelling techniques. The project was carried out in collaboration with BAM International, a leading construction company renowned for its commitment to cutting-edge design and sustainable practices. The primary goal was to optimise material usage while ensuring efficient earthing and lightning protection for the new proposed terminal.

Details

Pre-Site Phase

A critical foundational step involved supervising soil resistivity measurements at various locations on the site, following BS EN 7430:2011 standards. This study was essential for accurate earthing design and also provided valuable data for the lightning protection component.

The existing infrastructure’s visual/non-intrusive condition assessment was performed to understand the current earthing and lightning protection arrangements. This assessment helped identify potential risk areas and gaps that needed to be addressed during the design phase.

Earthing Design

Using CDEGS (Current Distribution, Electromagnetic Fields, Grounding, and Soil Structure Analysis) software, the project team modelled the existing arrangements to identify any risk areas or deficiencies. The modelling allowed a comprehensive view of the site, enabling precise earthing design.

Based on IEC-based standards such as BS EN 50522, BS 7430, EA TS 41-24, and local regulations, the team developed a scheme for the new proposed terminal’s earthing system. The design documentation, safety calculations, and drawings were provided, adhering to international best practices.
The earthing system was classified according to EA Engineering Recommendation S36, and the findings were adapted to meet international standards, ensuring global compatibility and conformity.

Lightning Protection Design

The latest risk assessment software, following IEC 62305:2 standards, was utilised to determine the required class of lightning protection for the terminal. Then the structures were analysed using 3D modelling software using the Rolling Sphere Method (RSM) to identify vulnerable areas, optimise material deployment and guide the design process to deliver unrivalled protection to the terminal’s users. The GreyMatters team designed lightning protection arrangements compliant with IEC 62305:2011 and other relevant standards. Detailed design documentation, safety calculations, specifications, and drawings were provided for the proposed system, along with surge protection specifications.

Post-Construction Phase

After the terminal’s construction, an audit was conducted to compare the as-constructed infrastructure against the original design. Additionally, earth measurements were performed and reported to assess the effectiveness of the implemented earthing system.

Conclusion

The Julius Nyerere International Airport Terminal 3 project successfully showcased innovation in 3D modelling for earthing and lightning protection design. By leveraging advanced technology and adhering to international standards, the project team optimised material deployment while ensuring a robust and efficient earthing and lightning protection system for the new proposed terminal. The project exemplified BAM’s commitment to cutting-edge design techniques and sustainable practices, setting a benchmark for future projects in the construction industry.
