Friday 17th October saw South African police take a giant stride forward in the battle to fight copper theft. This war is far from being over but a small victory that may, at least, make thieves think twice.
In recent times, thieves have stolen copper from electrical facilities and rail lines and sold them in a lucrative scrap metal market. South African officials are aware of the escalating problem as, in the most extreme cases, entire stadiums or towns have been without electricity.
On Friday police caught five thieves red-handed and then tracked them back to a scrap yard which contained tons of stolen copper! Police are confident that this find may slow the market. It is estimated that the copper found is worth R250,000!
When will the war end?
There are two ways in which copper theft will cease: firstly, there will have to be no market to sell copper in, that way people will not risk their lives (literally) to steal. Secondly, protect the copper – make it impractical to steal.
At GreyMatters we have a solution that will prevent theft and drive the market down, amongst other benefits!
Our Solution to Copper Theft – Conducrete
Encasing the cables in Conducrete not only devalues the scrap value of the raw material itself but also renders the conductors/cables impractically difficult to extract.
Not only will Conducrete prevent and deter theft, but it also increases the conductivity of the copper cables. As a result, earth conductors particularly become more efficient with a lower impedance which improves the performance of associated protection circuits!
Conducrete is a winning solution that will help businesses and governments fight against copper theft.
